A great thought came from Bob Hill at this past weekend's University of Dallas Basketball Coaching Workshop.
He spoke about attacking closeouts, either 1/1 or from a scramble situation. He talked about the long-held thought of when a defender is running at the ball, that the vast of majority of coaches would teach a shot fake at the running defender to throw him/her off balance. Coach Hill's thought is that when you catch the ball, you either have a shot or he wants you to rip and drive it. He believes that the shot fake allows the defender to actually gain balance while buying the other defenders a second or two to recover and adjust.
