The winningest coach in San Antonio Stars history, Hughes just finished his 10th season in 2014 guiding San Antonio to another playoff appearance. In his dual appointment as head coach and general manager, Hughes oversees the Stars’ basketball staff, the team’s roster development and all player acquisitions, while also coaching the team. Hughes stepped aside as head coach to assume a full-time general manager role for the 2010 season and resumed his dual roles in 2011.
In 14 years as a head coach – of the Charlotte Sting, the Cleveland
Rockers and San Antonio – Hughes has led his teams to 10 playoff appearances,
four Western Conference Finals and one WNBA Final. He has collected the third
most wins in WNBA history and also is the winningest coach in the history of
both the San Antonio and the Cleveland Rockers franchises.
More than thirty-two of Hughes’ former players and assistant coaches from
his 13 years as a WNBA head coach have gone on to join the coaching ranks at
the high school, college and professional levels, as well as
internationally.
“We couldn’t be more excited about have Dan join us at this year’s
Academy,” said Gary Blair. “Dan’s a dear friend and more importantly an
outstanding coach and teacher. I know those attending our Academy are
going to leave here better learning from him.”
Last year’s academy attracted over 100 coaches from all levels to learn from the Texas A&M women’s basketball coaching staff.
“The Coaching Academy has created a wonderful platform for us to share how we play and teach basketball the Aggie Way,” said Texas A&M women’s basketball head coach Gary Blair. “Our staff takes great pride in putting the Academy together in such a way that we can benefit junior and high school coaches as much as possible during the weekend, and continue our commitment to grow the game.”
The academy includes sessions led by each of the Texas A&M women’s basketball coaches, focusing on wide-ranging topics on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
Registration for the Academy includes three meals, a Texas A&M highlight DVD, a DVD of the Academy sessions and a notebook that includes tips on scouting, motivation, coaching philosophy, conditioning, and practice planning, in addition to a playbook.
