MASTER PRACTICE PLAN

Many years ago (many), I was a student at Marshall University and in a Basketball Coach Class that was taught by Thundering Herd head coach Stu Aberdeen. Coach Aberdeen left a profound impression upon in many ways. One of his favorites quotes was, "In so much as you shape the man, you shape the world." It really is true. We can make a difference in our society by the job we do working with young people.

Coach Aberdeen was also a stickler for detail and organization. Another thing he learned from in that class was to develop a "Master Practice Plan." The Master Practice Plan is a detailed list of everything that you plan on installing with your team. It is something that you as a coach would sit down in the off-season and begin working on in order to make sure that you are organized going into the fall.

What we have added to it is a six week calendar. Each day is marked with the time of practice and then to the right of it is a list of "Basketball Practice Objectives." There we would list whatever it was from the Master Practice Plan that we wanted to introduce on that day. It gives us a detail look at the first six weeks and a way to time the introduction of each phase. It has been tremendously important in helping us organize the early stages of our season.
