STRESS

In his book "Finding The Winning Edge", Bill Walsh delves into a topic that is important for all coaches to understand -- that is how relate to stress. As Coach Walsh states: "While stress can be either physical or mental, your body reacts to it in a very physical way." And the biggest side effect of stress that is not properly managed? It can cause you to lose focus "resulting in diminished performance and productivity."

Here are some factors Coach Walsh made reference to in assisting us with stress.

1. REALIZE THAT STRESS IS NOT ALL BAD
Some individuals can be motivated by a certain amount of stress.

2. KEEP YOUR COOL
The most crucial step in handling stress is to keep in mind that your reaction to a situation is often the primary cause of stress, not the situation itself.

3. DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
Save your energy for dealing with the larger issues.

4. VISUALIZE
Close your eyes and visualize yourself in a more positive, serene setting.

5. PRIORITIZE
When you're feeling overwhelmed, some steps are more important than others. Mentally, make a list of all the tings you need to do and then perform the tasks as necessary.

6. IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF STRESS IN YOUR LIFE
Once you know the causes, you'll be in a position to decide whether or not you can change them.
