SHOOTING FROM THE OUTSIDE

The following comes from the last page of Tara VanDerveer's book "Shooting From The Outside." It speaks to the challenge that we have in coaching, and more importantly, teaching today's young players:

My basketball camp for kids was starting at Stanford soon after I arrived home. In the middle of one of the drills, a 12-year-old girl sighed heavily.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"This drill is too basic," she said.

This was a drill we had done with our Olympic team. I thought back to when I was 12 and had to wear a bear custome to get near a basketball gym. Now 12-year-old girls were so advanced and cocky that drills we ran with our Oympic team were old hat.
