In 2008, Pat Williams, the GM of the Orlando Magic and a tremendous motivational speaker put out a book, "The Ultimate Coaches' Clinic." It is a fascinating book because of the style Pat utilized. He surveyed over 1000 coaches and administrators for insights to what is important to successfully do their job. From time to time I will share a few but it is a great book to own and I highly recommend it. Here are some thoughts from UConn’s Hall of Fame Coach Geno Auriemma.
1. Surround yourself with unbelievably talented people who complement you. Their strengths should support your weaknesses.
2. Don’t impose too much of your will on them. Delegate to your staff and let them do what they do well. Don’t undermine them.
3. Be absolutely sure of your convictions and be passionate in how you approach them. Your players will feed off that.
4. Everything you do every day is for your players, not for you. Your only concern is to make them better. When player sknow that, they will play hard for you.
5. Be who you are and not someone else.
