CHUCKISMS FROM CHUCK DALY

One of my favorite writers is Pat Williams.  He always seems to pick a great topic and and then give great insight and detail.  His books are must reads for coaches, teachers and leaders.  One of my favorites is "Daly Wisdom: Life Lessons From Dream Team Coach and Hall of Famer Chuck Daly."

I have long admired Coach Daly and his work but it greatly magnified with my friendship with Brendan Suhr who was a long-time assistant under Coach Daly.  There's nothing more I enjoy then spending time with Brendan and talking basketball and the subject will always lead toward Coach Daly.

Here are just a few excepts from the book titled "Chuckisms" but I promise the book is worth purchasing.

Coach Daly was obviously talking about roles within your program with ...
Chuckism #1: Players play, coaches coach, bus drivers drive the bus.

I'm a big believer that the biggest part of coaching is problem solving.  So does Coach Daily with...
Chuckism #5: Every day is a crisis.  My job is to land the plane safely.

Coach K said this is one of the most important things he learned from Coach Daly...
Chuckism #6: The best asset a coach has is selective hearing.

One of Coach Daly's favorites -- motivating teams on a nightly basis with...
Chuckism #10: Hang around guys, hang around.

Coach Daly certainly understood the importance of chemistry with...
Chuckism #19: You've to make sure the guys who don't play don't poison the guys who do play.

How was he successful for so long?  He understood relationship and relating to the individual...
Chuckism #20: Coaching basketball is not about Xs and Os but about diversity.

It's about the process -- forgetting last nights win or loss -- success or failure...
Chuckism #23: Never trust happiness.

We could all learn, as Coach Daly did, battling the media isn't worth it...
Chuckism #25: Never get in a fight with a person who buys ink by the barrel.

Another great lesson for young coaches...
Chuckism #33: Get past mad.

Don Meyer says it's not what you teach it what's you emphasize...
Chuckism #43: Rebound, rebound, rebound.

Again, it's a wonderful book full of insight and stories to go with each "Chuckism."
