THINGS I'VE LEARNED FROM COACH (#10)

This lesson from Coach Meyer is two-fold. First, he has a great sense of humor (and that's important in our profession). Second, he is man of his word.

It was a couple of summers ago and we had met up at a Baden Clinic in southern Florida. Coach Meyer was speaking along with Coach Knight and some others. Anyone that has been to a clinic that Coach speaks at knows that when he's not speaking, he's up in the bleachers with the other coaches taking notes. Well, we are sitting at the top of the bleachers in between speakers and Coach reaches into his briefcase and pulls out two little packages of Oreos and offers me one. I tell him that I am two weeks into a diet that doesn't allow any sugar and few carbs and the Oreos were definitely not on my list. He proceeds to tell me that a couple won't hurt me and he tells me with a laugh that he "hates to snack alone." I then tell him that I had promised my wife before I left that I would not cheat on my diet while on the road -- I gave her my word. Coach reassures me that my secret will be safe with him. Again I say "Sorry Coach but I promised my wife." He then tells me that I have two choices. The first choice is that I could share in the Oreos and no one would know about it. The second choice is that I could pass on the experience and he would tell my wife that I ate them anyway!

With a big laugh I held my ground and passed on the cookies. A week later my wife received an envelope with a used Oreo wrapper in it and a note from Coach saying that I had left this in his briefcase!

There's nobody like Coach!
