THINGS I'VE LEARNED FROM COACH (#12)

COACH MEYER: "Be what you is, cause if you is what you ain't, you ain't what you is." This is quite possibly the most recognizable of all of the Meyerisms.

A few years back I was suddenly thrust into the role of head coach at LSU at the beginning of the NCAA tournament. Coach Meyer was someone who called almost daily to offer me support and to give advice. "Be what you is..." was given to me on more than one occasion and I think it was important for our team to see me as me and not something different. By remaining the same person I'd always been, I believe it kept them relaxed and able to best focus on the task at hand, playing basketball.

Of course I'll never forget another piece of advice he gave me as well. "Dance (my nickname from coach), save your meal money in case it doesn't work out."
