5/5 CHANGE
This is one of our favorite drills and one that we got from Coach Bob Knight observing his practices at Indiana a few decades ago. We are in a 5/5 situation with the offensive team running our motion offense and the defensive team in our base man-to-man defense. While they are running offense, a coach yells out “change.” At the sound of “change” the offensive player immediately lays the ball down and the offense becomes defense and the defense becomes offense on the same end of the court. The new defense is not allowed to guard the player that was guarding them. This is a great drill for creating help and recover situations as well as stressing communication. We also do 5/5 Change Full Court. It is the exact same drill except now the new offense must convert to the other end of the floor. This creates an outstanding transition defensive drill. Whether half-court of full-court, it is also a good drill to develop decision making in your offense. Because of the "change" situation, your offense can often have some each shot opportunities. What you will find early on, however, is that the offense will rush things to try and "hurry up" into an easy shot.
