7 STEPS IN DEVELOPING A SENSE OF URGENCY

This list comes from Brian Tracy's outstanding book, "Time Power."

SET WORTHWHILE GOALS
Set worthwhile goals for yourself, goals that you intensely desire to achieve. All motivation requires "motive."

VISUALIZE YOUR TASKS AS COMPLETED
Visualize your goals as already achieved. Imagine how you will feel with the job behind you.

PRACTICE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
At the beginning of each major task, repeat and affirm the words, "Do it now! Do it now! Do it now!"

SET CLEAR DEADLINES FOR YOURSELF
Put yourself on record. Tell other people that you will have the job done by a specific time. You will find that promising others motivates you.

REFUSE TO MAKE EXCUSES
Rationalizing is explaining away and making excuses for unproductive behavior.

REWARD YOURSELF TO COMPLETION OF A TASK
In behavioral psychology, this is call "operant conditioning." It is a technique used to train both humans and animals.

ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR COMPLETION OF A JOB
Accepting complete responsibility for results, and never allowing yourself the luxury of a mental escape hatch, is the equivalent of putting your own feet to the fire.
