CLAIR BEE ON DRIBBLE USAGE

The following comes from, "Make The Team In Basketball," by Clair Bee. It was written in 1961. I love looking at the book because Coach Bee's fundamental approach to the game is timeless. The book is complete in all phases of the game in only 128 pages which speaks to Coach Bee's simplistic approach to the game. Here is what he had to say about dribble usage:

The dribble is important if used properly -- which means it should be used as follows:

1. To get out of trouble; to drive in for a basket

2. To bring theb all up-court when no quick-break situation is present

3. To advance the ball rapidly in the fast break when passing is impossible or dangerous

4. When no teammate is in position to recieve the ball and the player with the ball needs to set up a play

5. When meeting the pressing defense

6. In freezing the ball

Keep in mind that the ball can be passed from one position to another another many times faster than a player can dribble the ball. So make up your mind that you are not going to hamper your team's attack by "hogging" the ball through the selfish use of the dribble when you can pass.
