ADOLPH RUPP'S 7 CARDINAL PRINCIPLES OF GOOD DEFENSIVE PLAY

At Kentucky we're convinced that our defense will save us on the nights when our offense isn't working. Our players are taught to realize the importance of defense -- individual as well as team play -- and we spend one-third of our time on it. I believe that good defense embodies seven cardinal principles, as follows:

1. Reduce the number of your opponent's shots

2. Force your opponent into low-percentage shots

3. Control everything within 18 feet

4. Eliminate second shots

5. No easy baskets

6. "Point" the ball on all long shots

7. Prevent the ball from going in to the pivot
