MOTION OFFENSE PYRAMID

At the top of the Motion Offense Pyramid is BALL HANDLING. Everything we do in terms of offensive efficiency comes from our ability to pass, catch and dribble the basketball properly. Offensive success comes directly within a team’s ability to handle the ball without mistakes. It is at the point of the pyramid because despite good cutting and screening, a turnover will result in a failed possession.

The center core of the Motion Offense Pyramid is CUTTING and SCREENING. The ability to cut and screen, combined with the movement of the ball gives the defense its most difficult challenge. Teaching offensive players to move without the ball is just as challenging to a coach.

The foundation blocks of the Motion Offense Pyramid deal with the mental and teaching phases of motion. SHOT SELECTION is a cornerstone of our pyramid and is something that each player must have a solid understanding as defined by the coach. The same can be said of the opposite cornerstone, ROLE DEVELOPMENT in that players must have a strong comprehension of what the coach needs and expects. At the very center of the foundation row is TEACHING PROGRESSION. This is what makes the other five stones in the pyramid possible to be developed. The overriding fact that must be clearly understood is that without any one of the foundation stones, the pyramid will crumble or be incomplete – and so will your motion offense!
