ULTIMATE COACHES' CLINIC: PAUL DIETZEL

In 2008, Pat Williams, the GM of the Orlando Magic and a tremendous motivational speaker put out a book, "The Ultimate Coaches' Clinic." It is a fascinating book because of the style Pat utilized. He surveyed over 1000 coaches and administrators for insights to what is important to successfully do their job. From time to time I will share a few but it is a great book to own and I highly recommend it. Today will look at some wisdom from former LSU football coach Paul Dietzel.

1. Learn from every coach you every played for.

2. You can't be someone else. You've got to be yourself, because players will spot a phony quickly.

3. Show players that you are sincerely interested in them.

4. If you walk the walk, you actually become the walk.

5. The greatest word in the English language is loyalty, and it goes up and down. You are loyal to the people you're working for and to your players as well. You expect loyalty back from them. Loyalty is how you act when no one is looking. You have to go to bat for your associates, even if you don't like them or disagree with them. Loyalty is being honest.

6. Leadership is the ability to lift and inspire.
